Pionnier du mouvement graffiti en France dès le milieu des années ’80 (1986) Juan-Pablo « POPAY » De Ayguavives vit et travaille à Paris.

Renouvelant les canons -américains- du graffiti Hip-Hop sous diverses influences (Bande-dessinée, Figuration Libre ou Art Moderne…), Popay, tagger virtuose, maître es-calligraphie, est un des premiers artistes européens à avoir renouvelé le genre en agrémentant ses fresques de personnages picaresques, de paysages prolifiques et de ‘Freestyles’ fiévreux, abstractions lyriques et organiques d’une grande force et d’une réelle variété chromatique.

C’est alors déjà un ‘writer’ et coloriste hors-pair dans ce mouvement émergent en marge du marché de l’art, qui ne se fait pas encore appeler ‘Street Art’.

En termes de médium, Popay diversifie très tôt son activité plastique, au tournant du virage numérique, ne se cantonnant pas à la rue, ne se contentant pas des outils traditionnels, aérosol et marqueur. Il produit une multitude d’œuvres sur toile, mais aussi d’illustrations, dans des domaines très variés: fanzines, flyers, affiches, pochettes de disque, publicités, bandes-dessinées. Il s’initie également à l’infographie, au compositing et aux effets-spéciaux cinématographiques.

En parallèle à l’activisme quasi-puriste de la peinture clandestine et urbaine, fondé sur l’exemple d’outre atlantique, le style de Popay insuffle une liberté stylistique nouvelle, entre Punk, Rock Alternatif, et Hip-Hop. 

C’est un autodidacte qui, bien que n’ayant jamais intégré officiellement quelconque école d’art, ne néglige aucun style pictural, fut-il académique. Hormis les nombreux ‘crews’ graffiti alors très actifs à Paris, en électron libre, il hante les différentes écoles parisiennes (Beaux-Arts, Arts-Décoratifs, facultés d’Art Plastiques…) ainsi que différentes friches et squatts d’artistes (Les Frigos, Le Pôle Pi, La Miroiterie, etc…) , nouant de nombreuses amitiés avec d’autres figures artistiques de sa génération, aujourd’hui reconnues.

Er ist bereits ein herausragender Schriftsteller und Kolorist in dieser aufstrebenden Bewegung am Rande des Kunstmarktes, die immer noch nicht als « Street Art » bezeichnet wird. In Bezug auf das Medium diversifiziert Popay sehr früh seine plastische Aktivität, um die digitale Wende, nicht auf die Straße beschränkt, nicht zufrieden mit traditionellen Werkzeugen, Aerosol und Markern. Er produziert eine Vielzahl von Arbeiten auf Leinwand, aber auch Illustrationen in ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen: Fanzines, Flyer, Plakate, Albumcover, Werbespots, Comics. Er wird auch mit Computergrafik, Compositing und kinematografischen Spezialeffekten vertraut gemacht. Parallel zu dem quasi-puristischen Aktivismus der heimlichen und urbanen Malerei, der sich am Beispiel jenseits des Atlantiks orientiert, schafft Popay eine neue stilistische Freiheit zwischen Punk, Alternative Rock und Hip-Hop. Er ist ein Autodidakt, der, obwohl er keine Kunstschule offiziell integriert hat, keinen Bildstil vernachlässigt, auch nicht akademisch. Abgesehen von den vielen « Crews », die damals in Paris sehr aktiv waren, verfolgt er mit freien Elektronen die verschiedenen Pariser Schulen (Bildende Kunst, Dekorative Kunst, Fakultäten für Bildende Kunst …) sowie verschiedene Ödlandschaften und Besetzungen von Künstlern ( Frigos, The Pole Pi, The Miroiterie, etc …), die viele Freundschaften mit anderen Künstlern seiner Generation geschlossen haben, sind inzwischen anerkannt.
